Trick to Identify the Amphoteric Metals?

Any oxides react with both acids and bases is amphoteric for example ZnO. These are found in the heavier elements of Groups 14 and 15 and lighter elements of Groups 2 & 13 and also few elements of d-block.

From where this word Came ‘Amphoteric Metals’ ?

Word “amphoteric” come from the Greek word ‘amphoteroi’
which mean “both”. The phrases amphichromatic and amphichromic are related, which follow to an acid-base indicator that yields one colour while reacted with an acid and a exceptional colour while reacted with a base.

What are the Uses of Amphoteric Metals?

Amphoteric molecules with both acidic and basic groups are called ampholytes. They mainly appear in the form of zwitterions within a certain pH range. Ampholytes can be used for isoelectric focusing to maintain a stable pH gradient.
